I swear I am not racist, but this is going to make me seem horrible.
We got up early to catch our boat ride tour to the volcanic island a little ways out in the sea. We were told their would be 12 other people in addition to us. We waited for them for a while when the man started getting the boat ready. We asked if he was leaving without them and he said this, "No, here they come....the group from China..." Cue the Asians, all 12 middle aged women come climbing aboard.
Now this is going to sound bad. I am not racist but when people make no effort to have social skills, or they fit right into the typical stereotype, I have no patience. They pushed us around trying to get pictures, peace signs and all. Stole seats, shoved us. My dad asked if they spoke English, and after a long awkward silence, one goes "China!!!!" So we took that as, no.
Anywho, we got to the island and climbed all the way to the top where the volcano pit was still smoking and reeked of sulfur. Pretty cool, certain spots were really hot, and the rocks were steaming. A big hike but so cool. We got back to the boat and waited, the whole group with us were about 20 minutes late for meeting back. We then got to the hot springs which are heated by the lava underground. Only me, my mom and my dad got in. The closer we got to the volcano, the hotter it got. It got to the point where the water was probably 10-20 degrees hotter than the air.
We got back on the boat and my dad started making jokes about the Asians. They were really acting like children, and if you have ever seen the commercial for Geiko with the pig with his head out the window of a car going "WEEEEE WE WE WEEEEEE" it was similar to that with every wave we hit. My dads mocked them, talked about them right next to them and so forth. It was funny and all until we went to get off the boat back at the port and one of them said something like, "Have a fun time!" and we realized that some of them actually did speak English...oops.
Anyways, we got back into town and got lunch and coffee. My dad learned some news that made him laugh so hard he spit his coffee out all over himself and me. You throw away the toilet paper at most places here and he didn't know some of the common sense rules with doing so. This was so funny. I got so close to peeing my pants, all three of us laughed for probably 5 straight minutes.
Anyways, we then headed to the airport, returned the car, and took a plane back to Athens. This was a nicer flight, the plane had jets, we all got drinks, and the flight was generally smoother.
Santorini=amazing. 2 weeks until I go back!
