May 31: Athens to Santorini

Starting the day with Greek class was tough. We were all a little antsy for our trip that evening to Santorini.  Naturally class felt like forever, only really from 9:00-11:40. Afterwards, Brittany, Karlyn and I went down to Starbucks to meet up with George. He quit but we planned to meet him anyways.  He brought us cellphones so that it would be easier to get in touch with him when we needed to. After catching up with him, we all went to our apartments and packed for our trip!!

We took the metro to the port, where we got on our ferry almost immediately after buying our tickets. It was a lot bigger than I had expected.  The bottom stored tons of 18-wheelers, and then there were 2 floors full of people.  We got a nice big booth where we spent our 5 hour trip.  I, though, spent most of my time on the deck.  It was one of the most relaxed and peaceful times I've had since I've been in Greece.  Watching the sunset and listening to my music while reflecting on my time in Greece was a very humbling feeling.  It was nice to be with my friends and away from the chaos of the city and the worries of school.

Not only that but there were some STUDLY British boys on the boat. We spent a lot of time gawking at them, and a good amount of time playing some hilarious rounds of Taboo.

We arrived at Santorini around 1am and it was like landing on another planet.  We were all moved to the bottom of the ferry with the trucks and cars, standing and waiting for a drawbridge to go down to get us from the ferry to the island.  It backed into the port with loud beeping sounds and barking dogs for 5-10 minutes.  Everyone was crowded around the exit, waiting to cross the bridge to paradise.

We got off the ferry and had a vehicle waiting to take us to our hostel in Perissa. Despite some slightly unsafe and scary driving around quick turns on the edge of a cliff in a van that felt like it was going to tip over, we made it safe.  The owners were expecting us the next day, a miscommunication, but they were very welcoming despite that.  We got in our room and went to bed almost right away, after trying to get internet to tell people that we made it safe.  It was pretty cold at night and all we had was a sheet, but we survived.

First Impressions:
Where are we? Why does it feel like this hostel is in the middle of nowhere?
This hostel is really quaint.
This is going to be a very cultural experience, feel like we are immersed in the true lifestyle here.
It's beach time.
