June 4: Goodbye Santorini

Well, today was our last day in Santorini. We woke up early, hit the bakery and then headed to the beach. I just finished my morning coffee as I was handed my mojito at the beach. Perfection. "I can be your hero baby," came on and we later learned that Kristyn had a lovely super mooshy dream involving this song and a video montage....

We then swam around in the sea and spent a very long time trying to skip rocks. Some successes, lots of failures.  We then relaxed a little but had to call it a day early because the ferry was scheduled to leave at 3:30. We went back to the hostel, rinsed the salt water off us, dressed for the ferry, said goodbye to the lovely owners, and headed down to the port. We got there in the scorching heat of the day, hottest day of the week, parked our rental car, and walked down to purchase our tickets, only to hear the words..

"Sorry, it's full. Net boat is a speed boat and leaves at 5:00. The next regular ferry leaves at 2:00." Yes, that means in the morning. Speed boats cost about double the price so we had little choice in the matter and purchased tickets for the ferry at 2am, 11 hours later. Surprisingly though, this did not get us down. We walked back to the car, hopped back in and drove right back to the hostel.  They hadn't cleaned our room yet so they let us have it for only 5 Euro more for the rest of the day until we really left. We all ended up napping for a long time, and then Brittany, Karlyn and I set out on a journey to find coffee.  We stopped at a small cafe, where we found these pre-made and packaged cappuccinos. It sounded and looked kinda sketchy but I needed coffee.

We got in the car and as we drove back, we realized how AMAZING the coffees were. By the time we got back to the hostel, we finished them and wanted more. Before even getting out of the car, we turned around, drove back, and bought 4 more each. I now am stocked up in the freezer with coffee. "Cafe Zero Cappuccino." Yum. Eventually after killing a whole lot of time and eating dinner at our beach restaurant again, we went back to the port and were able to get on our ferry.

At first it was not a bad ride, but it was rougher than the first ferry ride, and numbingly cold.  I fell asleep on a booth seat, shivering. Woke up shivering many times. In the end though, it was only 6 hours and it made me happy to be back in my bed in Athens, whereas before I had been upset about goi ng back here. I am always surprised at how much I feel at home here.
