What an epic few days it has been. I'll give you some highlights:
1. Euroleague game. I met up with my dear cousin, Erin, and we went to see her husband, Stratos, play in a basketball game with the Athens team against Israel. Not only was this game huge, as the winners will proceed to the final four, but we had front row seats on the floor. Let me tell you, these games make the NBA seem boring. There is chanting the entire time, yelling and clapping, and flares. Thats right, people bring flares and smoke bombs into the stadium and set them off when something awesome happens. Anyhow, it was a really close game and it was tied up at about 10 seconds left, and Athens won on a foul shot! So they will be advancing to the final four which will take place in Istanbul in a month. I LOVED seeing Erin, meeting Abby, and getting to see Stratos play!
2. Today Lauren and I went to see the national gardens. In the middle of a big busy city, they have this giant beautiful park where you can almost fully escape the sounds of the city. In the garden is a small zoo, some ruins from ancient times, and lots of beautiful nature. We also ran into the cutest stray kitten. We sat with it for a little while and when we went to walk away, it followed us. We had to speed up and take some turns to lose it so that it would not follow us to the main road. It was heartbreaking, when it finally stopped trying to keep up, we could see it watching us and meowing loud in our direction. It literally killed me to walk away.
3. Traditional Greek dance lessons. Though it got a bit challenging, this was crazy awesome. I was a little weary about it since I am not the most coordinated person on the planet, but I was wrong. Some dances were more elaborate than others, but they were all so fun. Tomorrow we are going to a dinner/folk-dancing combination place, and put our lessons to the test. Exciting!
Anyhow, those are just highlights from the last few days, there have obviously been others such as getting fresh fruit from the open market, seeing the Olympic stadium, and feeling more comfortable with my Greek after lesson #2.
I have also realized how luxurious the life I lead in the U.S. is and how blessed we are to have such an easy life. Flushing our toilet paper, showering whenever we want to and not having to wait 20 minutes after turning on the water heater, showering as long as we want without being concerned about losing hot water, WASHERS AND DRYERS, dishwashers, being able to pay using $20 bills anywhere we go, driving most places, ect.
I know that I will be able to appreciate thing so much more when I get home, but I am really excited to see what I can learn from this and how it will affect my lifestyle. Blog again soon! :)
